Shibari Suspension: Advanced Technique, Safety, and Pedagogical Approach

Shibari suspension is as fascinating as it is impressive. A true technical achievement for many practitioners, it demands rigor, precision and a deep understanding of body mechanics and ropes.

At the École des Cordes in Paris, we approach suspension with a clear and responsible perspective: it is a highly technical that can be dangerous if not mastered . This is why we have made the strong pedagogical decision to no longer teach suspension in group classes.

Why suspension in Shibari is a unique practice

Unlike Shibari on the ground or in semi-suspension, the suspension engages:

  • The total body weight in the ropes,
  • Sensitive areas (shoulders, nerves, blood circulation),
  • Critical anchor points and lines of tension,
  • Careful management of time, breathing, and communication.

An error in angle, tension, or placement can have serious consequences. Safety in shibari suspension cannot be improvised and requires personalized guidance.

Shibari suspension classes: private lessons only

To guarantee serious and safe learning, Shibari suspension courses at the School of Ropes are now offered exclusively as private lessons .

This format allows:

  • A precise analysis of the student's technical level,
  • Work adapted to the body and limitations of the model,
  • Rigorous transmission of security protocols,
  • Real-time monitoring of progress.

Suspension is not an end in itself, but a natural consequence of patient and structured work. Private lessons are currently the only coherent framework for transmitting this practice under optimal conditions.

The Shibari Lab: Deconstructing and Constructing a Pattern

If the suspension requires individual support, we wanted to create a new collective format allowing for a deeper technical understanding of Shibari without putting oneself in danger: the Shibari Lab .

The Shibari Lab is a unique workshop offered in Paris, within the École des Cordes, designed for practitioners already initiated who wish to go further in the analysis and construction of figures.

What is Shibari Lab?

The principle is simple and powerful:

  • Students submit a figure or pattern challenge in advance
  • During the workshop, we break it down step by step,
  • We analyze the lines of tension, the supports, the safety, and the artistic intention
  • Together we rebuild a clear, fluid and reproducible version.

The Lab is a space for collective exploration where each participant benefits from the pedagogical experience of Alex Dirty Von P, while actively taking part in research and experimentation.

Why participate in the Shibari Lab?

  • Combining technique and creativity : understanding the internal logic of complex figures,
  • Developing autonomy : learning to analyze rather than copy,
  • Learning through collective intelligence : exchanges, cross-disciplinary perspectives, mutual support,
  • Progressing towards greater fluidity : while respecting the rigor inherent to this lineage.

Who is the Shibari Lab for?

The Shibari Lab is aimed at practitioners who have already acquired:

  • Mastering a secure TK/Gote,
  • The basics of fundamental links (single column tie, double column tie, counter-tensions, frictions),
  • Regular practice on the ground or in semi-suspension.

It is strongly recommended to come with a partner in order to fully enjoy the workshop.

A responsible approach to advanced Shibari

At the School of Ropes, we champion a vision of Shibari where technique serves the relationship, the intention, and safety. Suspension in Shibari requires time, humility, and a suitable learning environment.

Between private courses dedicated to suspension and Shibari Lab focused on analysis and construction, we now offer coherent formats to support an advanced, sustainable and conscious practice.
